How To Set Up A Hookah - Beginner's Guide

Hookahs, also known as Shishas, are widely available nowadays, with many bars stocking them; a flavored hookah pairs well with a few drinks. Bars usually have a wide range of hookah-flavored tobacco in their hookahs, but they don’t stack them with cannabis or hash. If you have a hookah at home, you can use it to entertain guests while also filling it with weed or hash. We'll show you how to use a hookah and how to set it up today; it only takes two minutes to get started smoking.

  1. Place hookah stem (with vase gasket) into the glass vase. The fitting must be perfectly airtight.

  2. Placing the metal hookah tray on top of the hookah stem. The tray may fit loosely or snap into place, depending on your hookah type. Some smaller hookahs come with built-in trays.

  3. Insert the hookah hose end with the hose gasket into the hose port on the hookah stem.

  4. If your hookah model has an air release valve, unscrew it to check for a ball bearing within. Return the valve to its original position. On the hookah stem, the air release valve is usually positioned opposite the hose port.

  5. Check the airflow on your hookah by placing your palm over the top of the stem and sucking with the hookah hose. There should be little to no intake of air. If your hookah has a check valve, blow through the hose while keeping your palm on the hookah stem. You should be able to hear air being vented through the check valve.

  6. When reattaching your stem, the bottom should only be 1 inch submerged in water. Reattach the stem to the base of the glass. With a rubber grommet, make sure the fit is snug and airtight. After that, join your hookah hose (using a grommet to make sure it is air-tight).

  7. Break up the shisha tobacco and put it slowly into the clay bowl. You will need to sprinkle the hookah tobacco into it so that it is loose enough for air to pass through. The shisha tobacco should be filled to the edge of the bowl, but not more.

  8. Now, tightly wrapped aluminum foil around the hookah bowl and poked with plenty of small holes on top for airflow. Some aluminum foil for hookah come pre-poked. So, you can directly apply it to your hookah bowl.

  9. Place the hookah bowl on top of the hookah stem and place the bowl gasket between the hookah stem and the bowl. The clay bowl should fit snugly.

  10. Light your hookah charcoals. If you have instant lighting coals, you can use a lighter or a match to light them. Other coals will need the use of a stove or a torch. Wait for the coals to become red hot all over before placing them on top of your hookah bowl. Break up the coals into smaller pieces and spread them gently around your hookah head. Be careful If you use too many coals, your smoke will become harsh and also will burn your tobacco faster.

  11.  Inhale on your hookah hose. It may take a minute before the hookah is smoking properly. Enjoy!
